High there ...
This time you get to read about me talking gibberish on a topic that is VERY near to us all.
" The ever growing commercialization of EVERYTHING". Everything has to make money. Nothing can be free anymore.
Let's start with an easy example:
www.planetarion.com . This is a simple online Strategy game. You are the head of a planet in a Galaxy and you have to find asteriods to grow (so you can buy ships and research things). This game has had FOUR Seasons (about two rounds a year) without having to pay to play it. It had banners to pay for the costs of maintaining the servers, site etc.. So far so good.
Now they start complaining that people don't click on the banners enough. They are starting to have cashflow problems. The last time I checked there a lot of players. A lot . So planetarion REALLY needed new servers, improved sites, better rules etc .. BUT !!! What I don't understand is this : If you see how many applications (to join the game) come in and you know your servers can't handle them (or you can't pay for better servers) , WHY LET THEM IN ?? I thought about this and I can only come up with one thing. GREED. Works something like this : Get as much publicity for being a FREE game. Get lot's of players to play it. So when you get lot's of people that enjoy the game (the Die Hards or addicts) THEN (!) start to ask money for it. Most people will pay for it cause they love the game, maybe even started clans for it. They bought websites and put in lots of time and energy into both the game and the whole scene within the game itself (clans, forums, filling in questionaires etc..).
Now they have a choice : Stopping and loosing every new online friend they made within the game, not being able to play the game you enjoyed for years OR (!) you can pay for it. I don't know about you but if CS was only available from CS 1.4 on and not free anymore I WOULD BUY IT. Speaking of CS... THE SAME THING HAPPENED WITH THAT GAME ! It was free first, free for all to play. Now they have a paid CD in the stores (Thank god that they still have all the updates on the internet for free). HOW LONG TILL WE ARE FORCED TO BUY A CD and no more (FREE) updates on the internet ? Luckily the greediness hasn't taken over all over Sierra yet. Or has it ? Sierra wanted to make a CD with all sorts of maps created by people at home, not the programmers at Sierra. They wanted to market that CD. Making those maps ONLY accessible to people who bought the CD ! Luckily for all of us all the mapmakers told them to go fock themselves. That's why we can still download the best maps for free.
Commercialization also invades your home. I don't know the situation in Denmark but in Holland there is the following annoying thing. First let me explain a few things >:)
We have about 10 Dutch TV channels. NL 1,2,3 which are the traditional broadcasting corporations that were founded out of ideology as far as I know this only happened in Holland so lemme explain: Early on when the +35 'ers were young (yes, they were young at some time too), maybe even very young, maybe not even born (LOL) in the 50'ies, Holland was "verzuild". Loosely translated this means "divided". Every sort of people had their own group. They stayed within their groups and never (because 1 they weren't allowed and 2 they were brought up to believe that the other group was less worth than they were, filthy, or untrustworthy because they had another religion. This was grounds enough for most people to stay within their groups. A few of those groups were Catholics, Protestants (the majority in Holland) and Communists. Each had their own God. Catholics and Protestants had God, Communists had Stalin, Lenin and of course Marx. When TV hit Europe each of these groups made their own broadcasting companies so they could spread their own ideology through this new medium. They needed money for that of course so they thought: Why not make people members and let them pay montly (maybe they called it sponsor or protecting your own ideology) for watching our programmes. Included in that price you payed was a weekly magazine written by the broadcasting company: a TV guide with all the TV listings plus that group's ideology in it, sort of like a weekly bible :)
(This is not the annoying thing I wanted to talk about but it's a good example to see that commercialization isn't new it just got 100000 times bigger and more annoying. The history lesson has to continue to get make my point extremely clear).
That's the history lesson so far. Now let's go a few decennia further. The companies found out the member numbers were declining. They needed new places to get resources from. They found commercials. At that time only NL 1 and 2 existed.
Let's get back to the present. Now we have NL 1, 2 and 3 and besides that we got the commercial stations: RTL4 , RTL5 , Net5 , (yes, counting is difficult for Dutchies) Yorin, SBS 6, Fox. (That's a lot of channels for only 15 million people). These are the commercial broadcasting companies without members. They need to make money by showing commercials all day long. The major difference between a traditional broadcasting company and a commercial one can be explained by the frequency of commercials. On the traditional channels you only have commercials before and after the news. On these channels you can watch movies and programmes WITHOUT an interruption for commercials. On the commercial channels however they split the movies into four or five parts and put about 3 to 5 minutes of commercials between them.
WAKE UP ! I'm getting to the annoying part :)
THE ANNOYING part is this : If the program is paused and the commercials kick in people get something to drink, go for a piss, make food or talk between the program. To INSURE that the commercial is heard THEY CRANK UP THE VOLUME OF THE COMMERCIALS. THATS FOCKING ANNOYING !!! So when you leave the room to pi$$ you still hear the commercial's contents. How's that for commercialization !
You NEVER asked for that sh!t ! NEVER !
And there are lot's more examples like these ones. Football matches for instance. In the early days you had a clubs logo on the shirt and that's was it. Now you have to have a sponsor's name the size of a whale's d!ck across your chest :(
So the world gets more annoying every year. I wonder when people will say NO and stop watching the commercial channels because they too get pissed off about the amount of commercials (I'm not even talking about the programming.. Too easy, hehe) they put on the TV. Well someone once said "if you wanna change the world start with yourself". Maybe it's time to start ?
Live long and prosper,

In CS1.5 there will be transparent CocaCola commercials for the dead ppl and 5 minutes ad spots when the map changes. And the sound will be turned up so you can hear it out in the back garden while you p*ss even though you are playing with headphones and you left them on the table inside. And bomb maps will have 3 bomb spots and will be known as Kinder-egg surprise maps. And........

Well nice story GF.
It didn't take so long to read it but I totally agree with you. Commercials stinks, and that's something we have talked about concerning our site. The only reason why we have a commercial on our front page is that they have donated our cool shirts and more, but we will remove it and let it up to the visitors to decide if they want to look at our sponsors on a special menu we will have up soon.
About our new server we have tried to get it paid by companies who thought it was a good idea with mature men playing a "boys" game on the net. Well I will say luckily they didn't and we can have a cool and clean server up running soon, with Punk Buster installed and without annoying commercials in the server name or whatever. But still we are glad for the partly help we have got and will off course make links to the involved companies.
The only commercials I enjoy on our TV is Polle from Snave or alike who had really great humor, and I have totally forgot what the product was, he he.
Frankly I'm so sick and tired of commercials that I would drop my TV if I had to choose, and rent VIDEO, DVD or go to the movies instead. It really pisses me off, and have done for several years.

allow me to disagree
some commercial its ok
if in some maps we d see coca cola banners (as long as they are integrated in the game) for me its ok
i wonder why they are not there already ....
what i dont like its agressive marketing obliging you to clic banners or opening a hundred windows of iE.
try to find a program crack and you ll be infested of pedophilia adds. even yahoo lately beiggins to open new windows
and as for dutch tv they only have shit movies i wonder who looks at that channels on the first place.....
